Paint and under coat paint

Paint and undercoat paint.

Clean carefully.

During the restoration of various Energic motoculteurs, after the removal of decades of grime and grease, I have eventually reached the red topcoat and sometimes glimpse the undercoat paint.

On the oldest machine that I have the Energic B1 from 1929/30 the outer bodywork is rusted and pitted. Yet the chassis and inside the hood (capot) gives you first sight of the original colour.

Energic motoculteur B1 The colour is evident on the mud gaurds.

A rich deep aged red topcoat, with orange undercoat pushing through after decades of wear.

On a B4L 350cc C7 I have an unusual Green undercoated. This looks great.

In Later models D9 for example, we have the orange undercoat and a far smoother top coat.

The topcoat in some circumstances has 2/3 applications that look like they are polished off (by hand) to give the final deep red colour.

The outer red coat colour fluctuates with exposure to light, weather and working conditions. But even in the worst rusty cases, you can still find that glorious deep red in the inaccessible areas or those covered by grease or age-old dirt/debris. Clean carefully and it will be unveiled in front of your eyes!

I often protect the degreased clean surface with a layer of old mineral engine oil (without too many additives) to give some form of protection against the elements. As that paintwork has sometimes not seen the light of day for 80 years and needs to be covered with some form of protection. Avoid metal brushing, it may remove the debris quickly, but will strip your paintwork.
